Photography Critique and Tall Tale Telling

  • Minervas Restaurant & Bar 2111 North Lacrosse Street Rapid City, SD, 57701 United States (map)

Purpose:  Get evaluations of your photographs from other photographers,
show off, steal ideas, learn new things, be inspired, be inspiring, tell
tall tales, and have fun.

When:  Every third Wednesday of the month. Arrive at 6:00 pm to socialize
and hand over your photos. The critique officially starts at 6:30 pm.
Official ending at 9:00 because that's when Minerva's closes. Ya don't
gotta go home, but you can't stay there.

Location:  Minerva's Restaurant & Bar at 2111 N Lacrosse St, Rapid City,
SD 57701

Where:  There is an open (as in no door) meeting room by the bar.
That's where you'll find us.  If you come in the front door the host
station will be in front of you, restaurant to your right, bar to your
left.  Go left.

Guidelines:

1. You can eat and drink during the event.  That's the point of doing
this at a location that has food and beverages.  Some people have started
showing up before 6 pm to take advantage of happy hour and get started on
food.  This seems to work fine as the room has usually been available
before our scheduled time of 6 pm.

2. Bring up to 6 photographs.  Export as JPG, full-size resolution.  Be
sure to export all your metadata with the image because someone is
going to want to know your f/stop or shutter speed, or ISO.  People will
want to zoom in to spot check your sharpness.  Hence, the full size.

3. Bring the original image before any edits if you like.  Don’t bring
RAW files, if you can avoid it.  Export as JPGs, full size.  Name the
files with the same filename as the edited version, then add “original”
or something similar to the file name.

4.  If you have photos you have edited based on feedback from a previous
critique, we will look at those first.  This will be a quick look, not an
in-depth critique.  Thus, you can show six images as norma,l in addition
to showing your critique-inspired edits.

5. We do have to keep time limits because Minerva's closes at 9 pm.  Time
for each photographer will be determined by how many people bring images
to show.

6. If it's your first time attending, you don't have to bring photos to
show.  After that, you have no excuse.

7. You can bring prints instead of or in addition to digital files.

8. Bring your images on a USB drive or SD card.  I will copy them to my
hard drive.  I have a PC.  Use a file system that Windows can recognize.

10. If you want your photos shown in a specific order, name them so they
will sort in that order when sorted by name.

11. Once your photos have been critiqued, we will vote on which was your
best, and the selected photo from each photographer will be submitted to
the newsletter for publication.  Our webmaster, Alex, will also put them
on the website.  You can opt out of this.
